A woman has died after falling 20m (65ft) down a cliff face at Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh.

The incident was reported to police at about 14:40 on Wednesday.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "A multi-agency rescue operation was launched but the woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."

The spokesman said the identity of the woman would not be made public until next of kin had been informed.

A inquiry into the circumstances of the incident will be carried out.

Arthur's Seat is the main peak in Holyrood Park, which sits to the east of the city's old town.

The hill rises above the city to a height of 250m (822 ft) and is popular for hillwalking.
