A police investigation has been launched after a hidden camera was found in a changing room at an Edinburgh sports centre.

The camera was revealed when a fourth year pupil from James Gillespie High School threw his shoe and dislodged a ceiling panel.

The changing rooms are used by male and females at different times.

The incident happened at about 15:30 on Wednesday.

It is understood the boys were at the sports centre for a PE class.

Meadowbank Sports Centre is run by city council arms-length company, Edinburgh Leisure.

An Edinburgh Leisure spokeswoman said: "Police Scotland is investigating an incident which occurred on Wednesday and all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure an isolated incident.

"I am unable to discuss any of the specifics at this time while a Police Scotland investigation is underway."

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in Edinburgh were made aware of a suspicious camera within the Meadowbank Sports Centre changing room.

"Inquiries are ongoing."
