Five teenage boys launched a violent attack on a man when he refused to hand over his mobile phone.

They chased the 22-year-old down the steps to Waverley station in Edinburgh shortly before 21:00 on Sunday.

When he tripped, they punched and kicked him, leaving him with facial injuries.

British Transport Police appealed for information about the youths who were all wearing tracksuits and baseball caps.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics but he did not need hospital treatment.

Det Con Paul Farquhar said officers would try to identify those responsible using CCTV footage.

He added: "This was an unprovoked attack which left the victim extremely shaken and anyone with information which can help our inquiries is urged to get in touch as soon as possible."
