Taxi driver assaulted and robbed in Edinburgh

A taxi driver was assaulted and robbed of his takings in the early hours of Boxing Day.

The incident happened at about 02:40 in Harvesters Way, in the Wester Hailes area of Edinburgh.

Police said the driver was assaulted by a male passenger who stole a three-figure sum of money and bankcards before making off towards Dumbeg Park.

The suspect was described as white, in his 20s, about 5ft 7ins tall, with short brown messy hair.

He was clean-shaven and of a medium build and was wearing a grey collared t-shirt with a black leather belt with metallic buckle.

Det Con Jenifer Bell of Police Scotland said: "This was a traumatic attack for the taxi driver, who was simply doing his job.

"Witnesses may have seen the taxi driver and male suspect running around the taxi before the suspect made off towards Dumbeg Park."

Officers have urged anyone who can assist them with their inquiries to come forward.
