A man is being sought by police in connection with an attempted rape in Fife.

The incident happened at about 22:30 on Sunday in Turriff Place, Kirkcaldy.

Police said a 26-year-old woman was subjected to a prolonged sexual attack in a car park beside a block of flats.

Officers are keen to trace a man who had engaged her in conversation as she walked on Dallas Drive shortly before the attack.

He told the woman that he lived locally and had been drinking earlier in the evening with a friend named "Alan" at an address in Harris Drive.

Anyone who has any information that can help police trace the suspect is asked to come forward.

He is described as being about 5ft 7ins tall, about 30 years old and was wearing a dark jacket with light jeans and trainers.

Det Sgt Samantha Davidson, of Police Scotland, said: "We are keen to speak with anyone who may have seen them walking together along Aboyne Gardens and through Birnam Road towards Turriff Place.

"This was a horrendous ordeal for anyone to go through and an extensive investigation is now underway in order to trace the suspect as quickly as possible.

"Such incidents are thankfully rare and extra high visibility patrols have been deployed to the area.

"I would ask anyone who recognises the description of the man and may have spoken with him earlier in the evening to contact police."
