Armed gang in 'violent' raid on Edinburgh jewellers

A police investigation is under way after an armed gang raided an exclusive jewellers in Edinburgh.

Staff were threatened with a knife and special tools were used to smash open display cabinets during the robbery at Hamilton and Inches on George Street.

It happened at about 11:30. Three men were involved, with a fourth man driving a white BMW in which the gang fled the scene.

Police described the raid as a "violent robbery" and appealed for witnesses.

The suspects were seen driving east along George Street, down Howe Street and along Heriot Row, after the incident.

The car was recovered by police a short time later and was being forensically examined.

Det Insp Carol Craig, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are currently investigating this violent robbery, which put several people in a state of fear and alarm, and I would appeal for anyone who witnessed this incident and has not already spoken to us to contact Police Scotland on 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 11."
