A taxi driver has had a "lucky escape" after a traffic cone was thrown from a bridge, smashing his front window.

The cone was hurled from North Bridge in the centre of Edinburgh in the early hours of New Year's Day, Lothian and Borders Police said.

PC Seona Fleming said: "This is a very serious incident as the driver of the private hire vehicle had a very lucky escape."

The taxi was in Market Street below the bridge at about 04:55.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Officers are also sourcing CCTV from the surrounding area.
