The One Show's Matt Baker has set off from Edinburgh Castle pedalling a rickshaw to London in aid of BBC Children in Need.

The charity telethon returns on 18 November with a seven-hour show. Last year it raised £18m for good causes.

Baker will spend Friday night in Hawick, before pedalling 10 hours a day to complete the 484 mile route.

He said: "Children always need help, it doesn't matter what's going on with the economy."

The Ricksaw Challenge trek has already raised more than £250,000 in donations.

Baker said: "We wanted an idea that would incorporate the whole of Britain. We're going to be slicing right down the middle of it, but we wanted an idea that every night on The One Show we could have all those stories there."

The route takes in Hawick, Hexham, Barnard Castle, York, Lincoln, Peterborough and Cambridge, with Matt due to arrive at Television Centre in London for Children in Need next Friday evening.

"It's just a great cause," he added. "I'm doing my bit. If people want to see me going through hell, sweat, blood, tears - the whole lot - then if that gets the cash in, that's the way to go."
