Student seriously hurt in Knockhill car crash

A 19-year-old Dundee University student has suffered serious head injuries in a crash at Knockhill race track in Fife.

Students from several Scottish universities were taking part in the Formula Student event, driving cars which they had designed and built.

The second-year civil engineering student was driving the Dundee team's car on a test circuit when he left the track and struck a crash barrier.

The teenager is being treated at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.

Fife police said the student was initially assisted by the track medical team after the crash on Tuesday, and an ambulance and the fire service were called.

He was treated at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline before being transferred to a specialist unit in Edinburgh dealing with head injuries.

In a statement, the university said the student had completed several laps when the car left the track and hit a barrier.

It added: "All students and staff within the team are thinking of their colleague."
