Gaunt man with dog sought over Edinburgh garage fire

A thin, gaunt man with a Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog seen in an Edinburgh garage just before it was set alight is being sought by police.

The incident happened at about 18:20 on Sunday in Trafalgar Lane.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the garage with several pieces of furniture was set alight.

The fire spread from the garage to a neighbouring stairwell causing minor smoke damage. No-one was injured and no flats in the building were affected.

Serious consequences

The man is described as white, 20 to 25 years old, of slim build and gaunt appearance.

He was wearing a yellow, black and green Adidas cap, dark-coloured knitted top, light-coloured jeans with a dark blue V on the back pocket and black Fred Perry Trainers.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "No serious damage was caused.

"However, this reckless act could have had more serious consequences if the fire had spread more aggressively and we are carrying out a robust investigation to trace the person responsible.

"We have a detailed description of a man seen in the area before the fire broke out and anyone who believes they can assist us in tracing him is asked to contact police immediately."
