The death of a man after a "violent attack" at a flat in East Lothian is being treated as murder.

Lothian and Borders Police said officers found the "seriously injured" man after they were called to Toll House Gardens in Tranent at 0400 GMT.

The man, who is thought to be 22 years old, died shortly afterwards.

It is believed he was in the flat when a disturbance happened. A police spokesman said they were trying to establish what happened.

An incident room has been set up at Dalkeith Police Station, where a team of 20 officers will be based because Tranent police station is too small.

Det Ch Insp Willie Guild, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "This young man has been the victim of a violent attack, and we are appealing for help from the public in order to identify his killer.

"We are asking anyone who was in the area at 0400 GMT, and who may have seen or heard something suspicious, to get in touch."

He said witnesses could contact police or Crimestoppers.
