Masked man robs Edinburgh cafe at knifepoint

A masked man robbed a cafe in Edinburgh after brandishing a knife at a member of staff.

The man, whose face was covered with a scarf, carried out the robbery at the Metropole in the Newington area at about 1730 BST on Sunday.

He walked behind the counter and stole a three-figure sum of money from the till before making off south along Newington Road.

He was aged 17-25 and was wearing a grey or olive green hooded top.

Police said he was 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in tall and of slim build.

A police spokesman said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the shop assistant who was threatened, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspect.

"The cafe was busy with customers at the time of the robbery, and we want to speak to any customers who witnessed the incident who have not yet been in touch with police."
