A man has been jailed after he threatened a woman with an axe because the shop she worked in did not stock Buckfast.

Sean McLoughlin admitted brandishing the weapon at the 19-year-old shop worker and stealing a bottle of vodka.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that the 23-year-old was drinking for two days before the attack at Londis in Niddrie Mains Road, Edinburgh.

McLoughlin, who has previous convictions, was jailed for 16 months.

The court was told that he expressed great remorse for his actions on 29 November last year.

Sheriff John Beckett QC said: "The court cannot tolerate people working in shops, providing services for the public, being subjected to behaviour likely to be intimidating and frightening indeed".
