Second senior Kirk figure resigns

A second senior figure on an important Church of Scotland committee has resigned within the space of a fortnight, BBC Scotland has learned.

The Reverend Mark Johnstone, a minister in Kirkintilloch, has stood down as Convener of the Mission and Discipleship Council.

In a statement, the Church of Scotland said he resigned for personal reasons.

Two weeks ago Dr Steven Mallon, the secretary of the same committee, left his post.

That was also for personal reasons.

At the time, the Kirk said it had been carrying out an internal investigation into its financial processes.

It said a routine audit check identified issues which required investigation, and appropriate action was being taken.

The Church said that would include the clarification of rules, guidelines, processes and the on-going training of staff.

It said there would be no further comment as it was an internal matter.
