Nominations close in UUP leadership bid

The Ulster Unionist Party has said that nominations for the position of party leader have now closed.

The party said Tom Elliott and Basil McCrea have both submitted their names to take on the post.

Mr Elliott is an assembly member for Fermanagh South Tyrone and Mr McCrea is MLA for Lagan Valley.

Sir Reg Empey announced he would be standing down following a disappointing election during which the party failed to win a single seat.

The party said it will hold a number of internal meetings where the leadership candidates will be able to put forward their views on how the party should move forward.

It said these will be held throughout Northern Ireland in the coming weeks and will be open to party members to attend.

The selection of the new leader will be held on Wednesday 22, September in Belfast.
