A child is in a stable condition in hospital after being knocked down in a hit and run.

The young girl was hit by a silver car on the Racecourse Road in Londonderry at about 16:00 BST on Monday.

She was taken to hospital but her injuries are non-life threatening, according to the Western Trust.

Police said the car failed to stop after the collision and headed in the direction of Blighs Lane.

Police have appealed for witnesses or those with dashcam footage to come forward.

'Shattered pelvis'

Sinn Féin councillor Caoimhe McKnight told BBC Radio Foyle that it was an upsetting time for the young girl and her family.

"We are very lucky that it wasn't a fatal accident," Ms McKnight said.

"I mean it would seem incredible that someone would hit a child or anyone and then leave the scene. I am shocked and disgusted."

The road was closed for a time after the incident.
