Two men have been taken to hospital after a fire in a hotel in County Donegal.

It started in a bedroom in the Beach Hotel in Downings early in the morning but fire crews managed to contain the blaze.

The men were taken to Letterkenny General hospital where they were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

It is not yet clear how the fire started.

The acting chief fire officer for Donegal, Sean Campbell, said it shows the importance of people being vigilant.

"Two brigades were mobilised to the incident and they were alerted to the fire by hotel staff.

"The hotel was evacuated and that was owing to the quick reactions of the staff but the more drills and practices people do the better.

"The room was mainly smoke damaged but we're lucky that was the height of it."

It's the second time the hotel has been damaged in a fire in the last 10 years.
