Derry student nurse death: Post mortem examination due to be held

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out on the body of woman who was found at a flat in Londonderry.

The 19-year-old woman died in hospital after being found unconscious at the foot of stairs at a flat in Cromore Gardens at about 02:30 BST on Thursday.

Police have said they are keeping an open mind as to how she died. A 21-year-old man has been arrested.

Kellyanne Teggart was from Portaferry and had moved to the city last week to begin a nursing degree.

The Alliance MLA for Strangford, Kieran McCarthy, offered his sympathy to the victim's family who were "very well respected and well-known throughout the entire Ards peninsula".

He said the local community was in "absolute shock" after hearing about the young woman's death.

Meanwhile, detectives have appealed for help in tracing the County Down teenager's movements before 02:00 BST.

Det Ch Insp Michael Harvey said: "We know that she was in a nightclub in the city centre with friends.

"We believe she left the nightclub in a taxi at about 1am.

"We are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances of this tragic death."

Derry Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Campbell said the community was shocked by what had happened as it was a "quiet neighbourhood".
