Derry attacker 'worthless piece of humanity'

A district judge in Londonderry has described a homeless street drinker, who punched a 16-year-old girl, as a "worthless piece of humanity".

Judge Barney McElholm made the comment in the case of 42-year-old Liam Bradley.

The court was told that the girl, 16, was punched to the ground in an unprovoked attack in Derry on Saturday.

A solicitor said Bradley ran at the girl from behind as she walked along Foyle Street.

She was later treated in hospital for bruising to her lips and face.

The solicitor described Bradley's 215 previous convictions as "horrendous".

The solicitor said that Bradley was jailed last September for five months for a similar attack on a party of tourists.

Jailing Bradley for 14 months, Mr McElholm described him as a "worthless piece of humanity" and a "danger to the public".

He said he wished he could give Bradley five times the jail sentence he imposed.
