A headteacher has spoken of her dismay after vandals smashed 60 windows at their new school building.

Police say three people broke into the former site of Avoniel Primary School in east Belfast on Saturday night.

The building is being renovated for Elmgrove Primary and principal Jayne Jeffers said the full extent of the damage would not be known until Monday.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Officers said the damage was reported just after 23:00 BST and graffiti was also sprayed around the building.

"We are shocked vandals could so heartlessly destroy the building Elmgrove has waited so long for," the principal wrote on Twitter.

"Our new building will be a valuable asset to our children who deserve nothing but the best."

She appealed to the community to share any information with the police.
