A security alert in south Belfast has ended after a suspicious object was declared an "elaborate hoax" by police.

A number of homes in the Ormeau Road area were evacuated following a report of a suspicious object.

Police attended the scene on Friday morning, with Park Road and Cross Parade both closed as ammunition technical officers examined the object.

Roads in the area have now reopened and the object has been taken away for further examination.

Officers appealed to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area to contact the police.
