The Army has carried out a controlled explosion on a World War Two mortar shell found on a County Down beach.

The device was discovered shortly after midnight in an area of Dundrum known locally as the Twelve Arches.

The police maintained a cordon at the scene overnight, and Army bomb disposal officers arrived at first light.

Coastguard staff assisted the officers to gain access to the unexploded shell so they could make it safe.
