Arrest after man is stabbed five times in Newcastle

A man who was stabbed five times in County Down is in a stable condition in hospital.

He was attacked at about 19:35 GMT near a supermarket on the Castlewellan Road in Newcastle.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident. The victim, who is in his 40s, was taken to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital.

Det Insp Brian Foster said: "This occurred at quite a busy time."

He added: "Therefore, I would ask anyone who was in the area at the time to contact detectives at Downpatrick police station on non emergency number 101."

Margaret Ritchie, the MP for the area, said the attack had been "brutal and terrifying".
