Man charged with murdering his mother in Portavogie, County Down

A 25-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering his mother in Portavogie, County Down, at the weekend.

Viktors Arustamovs, of no fixed abode, and who is from Latvia, appeared in Downpatrick Magistrates' Court.

The body of his mother, Lija Aroustamova, 52, was found in a house in the fishing village in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police have said they can connect him to the charge.

An interpreter explained the court proceedings to Mr Arustamovs in Russian and the accused replied in English, giving his date of birth and saying he understood the charge.

No bail application was made and Mr Arustamovs was remanded in custody until 8 January.
