Ciclovia: Belfast creates traffic-free zone for cyclists

A number of roads in Belfast city centre were closed to traffic on Sunday morning to create a temporary traffic-free zone for cyclists.

The Ciclovía event was aimed at encouraging more people to leave their cars at home and cycle into the city.

The traffic-free zone followed a return route along Botanic Avenue, Shaftesbury Square, Dublin Road, and Bedford Street to Belfast City Hall.

Motorists were diverted from the route between 09:00 BST and 12:45 BST.

Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said the event was an "outstanding success" and added that he would like to see it extended next year.

"It's only ten months since the Ciclovía concept was brought to Belfast so to see the dream of a car-free city brought to reality today was a great testament to what can be achieved when we all pull together," he said.
