Armed gang threaten delivery driver in west Belfast

A delivery driver has been threatened by an armed gang during a hijacking in west Belfast.

He was approached by a number of men while parked in Ladybrook Park around 06:35 GMT on Saturday.

The driver was threatened with a knife and forced to hand over the keys. The men then drove off in his van.

Police later spotted the vehicle in Mount Alverno and pursued it. Two men, aged 31 and 19, were subsequently arrested in Glenside Road.

The van has been seized for examination.

Ch Insp Anthony McNally, who heads the PSNI's dedicated anti-car crime operation in Belfast, Operation Galleas, praised the response of his officers.

"This morning's hijacking must have been a terrifying ordeal for the van driver, but thanks to the prompt actions of the responding officers who were part of our Operation Galleas patrols today, the van was quickly detected and two arrests made," he said.
