A 33-year old man has denied murdering a man and woman at a flat in east Belfast.

The bodies of Caron Smyth and Finbar McGrillen were found in the living room of an apartment at Ravenhill Court on 12 December last year.

They had been beaten to death.

When the charges were put to Ciaran Nugent, from Falls Road, at Belfast Crown Court, he replied 'not guilty'. He is the second person to be charged in connection with the double murder.

Co-accused Shaun Patrick Joseph Hegarty, 34, formerly of Grainne House, in the New Lodge area of north Belfast, appeared in the same court earlier this month and also entered 'not guilty' pleas to the two murders.

The case is due to be reviewed again at the end of January, and the trial, which is expected to last up to four weeks, has been scheduled to take place next May.

After the not guilty pleas were entered, Nugent was remanded back into custody.
