Newtownabbey Linfield supporters club bookkeeper accused of fraud

The bookkeeper of a Linfield supporters club has appeared in court accused of moving tens of thousands of pounds from the club's accounts into his own.

Perry Clements, 37, from Green End, Newtownabbey, County Antrim, is accused of a single count of fraud by abuse of position.

Mr Clements was the bookkeeper of the Newtownabbey Linfield supporters club at the time of the alleged offence

He replied "not guilty" when the charge was put to him.

He has been accused of transferring more than £38,000 from the club's accounts into his own bank account between 13 October 2009 and 25 March 2011.

The accused has been charged with transferring a total amount of £42,703.04, which was £38,067 more that the £4,636.04 he was entitled to.

When Clements entered his not guilty plea, his barrister told the court that after discussing it with the Crown he was "confident we may be able to resolve some issues".

He also told the judge that there "is not going to be a need for a trial".

The case was relisted for 16 October and Mr Clements was released on continuing bail.
