Cork farm: Girl, eight, killed in accident
An eight-year old girl died and an 11-year-old girl was critically injured in a farm accident in County Cork.
It happened just outside Newtownshandrum, in the Charleville area, about 18:00 BST on Sunday.
It is understood the girls, who were not sisters, were picking blackberries in a field when the bucket of a tractor fell on them.
The younger girl was pronounced dead at the scene and the injured child was taken to Cork University Hospital.
The two children were understood to be staying with friends of their Latvian parents for the weekend when the incident occurred.
The eight-year-old's parents flew back to Dublin on Sunday night, unaware of what had happened, and were informed of the accident by police when their plane landed.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out on Monday.
