Carrickfergus Advertiser and Ballyclare Gazette closing

The Carrickfergus Advertiser and Ballyclare Gazette newspapers are to close.

They are part of the Alpha Newspaper Group.

Eight jobs will be lost, but the company has said it hopes some of the workers will be redeployed to other papers in the group.

The Carrickfergus Advertiser was first published in 1883. Alliance East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson said it was "devastating news".

"The Advertiser staff have worked hard over the years; always creating a welcoming atmosphere in their office," he said.

"It is therefore important that they be treated respectfully by management, and my top priority will be to ensure that they are treated fairly in the coming days.

"However, this decision is evidence of a wider problem in local newspapers across Northern Ireland and action must be taken to ensure more local titles do not fold."
