Ballymena is to get a new hotel, shop and petrol station on a nine-acre green-field site at Ballee.

The £8m project has been given planning approval and is backed by the local council.

The Environment Minister Alex Atwood said the new 60-bed hotel would boost tourism and create jobs.

"This will provide accommodation in the gateway to Slemish, the glens of Antrim and for those travelling to the north coast," he said.

"It will also provide sustainable and more economical transport options for local people - a plus for the environment."

Beechview Developments, owned by County Antrim property developer Bryan Orr, submitted the plans for the budget hotel.

The project will be located on land adjacent to the Larne Road Roundabout at Ballee.

Access to the park and share facility will be from the M2 motorway.
