A man who allegedly set fire to his Newtownabbey home has appeared in court charged with arson.

Ian Charles Edgar, 58, from Sandyknowes Park, was charged with setting fire to the home he shares with his wife either through intention or recklessness.

His wife became trapped upstairs after going back in to get her dog. She had to be rescued by the Fire Service.

Mr Edgar was remanded in custody as police feared he was a danger to himself and his wife.

He was arrested on Friday afternoon.

The blaze broke out in the living room of the house at about 02:00 GMT on Friday.

His wife, Mary Geraldine Farry, was overcome by fumes in an upstairs bedroom when she went back into the house.
