The funeral of a police officer killed in the floods in the Republic has taken place in County Wicklow.

Garda Ciaran Jones was buried after funeral mass in Manor Kilbride on Friday.

The 24-year-old was killed when he was swept away while trying to warn motorists during Monday night's flooding.

The Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny was among 700 mourners at St Brigid's Church.

The Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan and outgoing President Mary McAleese also attended.

Fellow police officers formed a guard of honour from the church to the cemetery.

Garda Jones' girlfriend Clare Kennedy described how they met as teenagers when she spoke at the end of the mass.

Fr Padraig McDermott described the police officer as "the life and soul of the community" during the homily.
