A block of flats had to be evacuated following a fire in south Belfast.

The Fire and Rescue Service received a call about the blaze at Noel Murphy's printers in University Street at 0830 BST.

The adjoining block of flats was evacuated while the Fire and Rescue Service tackled the blaze.

The Fire service said they were investigating an asbestos risk in the building. Residents have since returned to their homes.

Fire and Rescue Service Area Commander, Aidan McGuinness, explained the difficulties in tackling the blaze.

"This is a fairly well developed fire and it required four appliances. We also needed an aerial appliance because of the nature of the building," he said.

"The walls are quite unstable so we are not able to go right into the building to fight the fire, we have to fight it from the outside.

"Because of the amount of smoke involved it meant firefighters had to use breathing apparatus."
