Ruane orders review of school closures

Education Minister Caitriona Ruane has ordered a review into why hundreds of schools closed during the heavy snowfall in December.

She said she wants to minimise the risk of future disruption to schools and reduce the impact on pupils' education.

Ms Ruane has asked education boards for information on which schools closed, how long they were closed and why.

However, she said her department would not remove a principal's rights to make decisions based on local circumstances.

A working group will also look at ways to improve the way schools communicate with parents when they decide to close unexpectedly.

Schools can decide to work over holidays to make up for the time lost due to the bad weather.
