Police in County Down are investigating reports that an illegal checkpoint may have been set up on Friday night.

The incident is alleged to have happened just after 2100 GMT in the village of Attical near Kilkeel.

Police were called to the scene and a helicopter was launched as part of a search operation to find those responsible.

The PSNI have spoken to three youths in connection with the activity.

A police spokeswoman said they are investigating if the incident was a practical joke and denied reports a gun was involved.

She added: "There was no production of a weapon or mention of one. No arrests have been made to date in connection with this incident.

"Police investigations into suspicious activity in the area of Atticall and Kilkeel last night are ongoing."
