Lost baby seal found at Strabane plant hire yard
A baby seal who lost his way has found a new home in the yard of a machinery hire company in Northern Ireland.
Nigel Gilchrist, who works at WT Hire in Strabane, County Tyrone, was opening up on Thursday morning when he discovered the pup.
"I turned round and met the seal coming in the door of the workshop towards me," he said.
"I couldn't understand what it was.
"I certainly didn't expect to see a seal."
The firm's manager, Wesley Hawkes, immediately contacted the local vet, who put him in touch with a seal sanctuary in Newtownards, County Down.
"They told us to leave it alone until they'll come and look it," he said.
"They said it would do it no harm to run around the yard for a few hours until they can get there.
"It's very bright-eyed, and looks very healthy, and moves about surprisingly fast.
"There's a stream nearby which runs into the River Mourne, and they think it is a pup who lost his way."
The firm's latest recruit has made himself at home in the workshop, and is proving very popular with the customers.
"People are coming from all around to see the seal," Wesley said.
"He's just running about the yard here, and he seems happy enough."
