MBEs for services to young people

Three people from the north west have been awarded MBEs for services to young people.

The President of the Boys' Brigade in Londonderry, Don McClay, was recognised, as was Brendan Wilkinson from Derry and Eugene Stewart from Coleraine.

US Open winner Graeme McDowell also received an MBE for services to golf.

They were one of 54 people from across Northern Ireland recognised in the New Year Honours List.

Mr Wilkinson, who works with young people in Pennyburn, said he was speechless.

"I really can't believe it, because I never expect anything out of life so I'm never disappointed.

"To get something like this, it's very hard to put into words.

"I'm very humbled that people would think I was worthy of being put forward for such an award."

Mr McClay, who has run the Boys' Brigade in Derry for 36 years, said the award came as a "bolt from the blue".

"I was absolutely thrilled.

"It's been a privilege to chair and to be involved with the Boys' Brigade over the years.

"I'm so grateful to have been honoured in this way."
