A 31-year-old man has appeared in court in Limerick charged in connection with the deaths of four people in Newcastle West on Tuesday.

John Geary, of Meadow Court, Newcastle West, was charged with murdering Sarah Hines, her children, Reese, 3, and Amy, five-months, and Alicia Brough, 20.

Their bodies were discovered in a house in the town.

Mr Geary was granted free legal aid and remanded in custody until next Friday when he is due back in court.

The court was told he made no reply when charged on Friday evening.

There was a request that the accused, who had a hand injury, received any medical assistance required while in custody.

Ms Hines was originally from Essex and had moved to Ireland with her family when she was a teenager.

She and her children had only recently moved into the house in Gortboy.
