Rape trial of Thomas Devlin killer Nigel Brown halted

A rape trial of one of the men convicted of the murder of schoolboy Thomas Devlin has been halted.

Nigel Brown, 27, from Whitewell Road in north Belfast, had been charged with raping a girl in September 2008.

His trial was due to open on Monday, but Belfast Crown Court was told it would not proceed and the charges were to be left on file.

Brown is currently serving a minimum 22-year jail sentence for the murder of the 15-year-old in August 2005.

Reporting restrictions on the rape trial were lifted by Judge Tom Burgess, after a defence barrister raised no objections to an application by the prosecution for the charges "to be left on the file - not to be proceeded with without the leave of this court or the Court of Appeal".
