Woman injured during sectarian assault in Londonderry

A woman has had her cheek bone broken during an attack by a man in the Waterside area of Londonderry.

The woman, who does not want to be identified, told Radio Foyle she believed she was targeted because of her religion.

The incident happened at Church Brae at about 1800 BST on Sunday.

"I had my seatbelt on and I bent down to get my purse out of my handbag when the car door opened," she said.

A man standing beside the car then told her to leave the area using abusive and sectarian language.

The woman tried to pull the door closed but the man opened it again and punched her in the face.

The attacker is described as being about 6ft in height, in his 30s, of slim build with short dark spiky hair. He was wearing a navy jumper.

The police have asked anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
