The A1 bypass at Newry, County Down, has been reopened after a security alert was declared a "deliberate hoax".

A suspicious object was found between Carnbane and Forkhill Road roundabouts on Tuesday.

Camlough Road was also closed in both directions on either side of the flyover.

Army bomb experts examined the object, which was later declared a hoax.

Police have described the alert as "a deliberate attempt to cause disruption for members of the public, including through traffic using the busy road nearby".

The PSNI said a number of stones and other missiles were thrown at police responding to the incident.
