York taxi fatal crash victim named as Robert Stephenson

A man who died after being struck by a taxi in the centre of York has been named as Robert Stephenson.

The 21-year-old, from the Pickering area, was struck by a Ford Mondeo at around 02:30 BST on Saturday on Micklegate.

Mr Stephenson was treated at the scene and was taken to hospital. He was pronounced dead a short while later.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident and have appealed for witnesses.

Mr Stephenson had been socialising in York with friends, police said.

In a statement, his family said: "We are devastated at our loss and still trying to come to terms with it as a family.

"We'd like time to grieve privately and thank all our friends and family for their support and kind thoughts."
