A ten-day festival of comedy, music and dance will kick off its inaugural year in York later.

The Great Yorkshire Fringe will see 100 shows take over the city centre until 2 August.

Big name draws include Have I Got News For Your star Paul Merton, stand-up comedian Reginald D. Hunter and comic actor Tim Brooke-Taylor.

Parliament Street will be covered with artificial grass to turn it into a village green with three new venues.

Festival founder Martin Witts said: "I'm delighted at the calibre of the comedy stars we've signed up to entertain the city of York this summer."

He said they were all "superstars" who were "among the biggest names in the business".
