York taxi death man named as Sam Wilson

A man who died when he was hit by a taxi after street violence erupted in York has been named.

Sam Wilson, 21, of Haxby, is thought to have been involved in an incident on Haxby Road, York, at 01:48 BST on Saturday, police said.

Officers said Mr Wilson was hit by the passing vehicle and died at the scene.

A 20-year-old York man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and officers are searching for two other men who were in the area.

North Yorkshire Police said that while officers were on their way to a report of street violence they were called by a taxi driver who had been passing and reported his car had hit a pedestrian.

'Matter of urgency'

Police have not issued a description of the wanted men but said "they were in the area and could assist with our inquires".

Det Insp Andrea Kell, of York CID said: "The men we are looking for know that we need to speak to them as a matter of urgency.

"I urge them to come forward and contact the police immediately.

"It is in their own best interests to do so, sooner rather than later.

"Officers have already visited a number of addresses to which the two men have links.

"They will continue to actively search for them until they have been traced."

A 20-year-old York man who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter is being questioned by detectives..

Two women, aged 16 and 20 years old have also been held by police. Two men, both 18 and from York, were released on bail.

North Yorkshire Police said that a 22-year-old local man who was arrested following the incident was released from custody and faces no further action.
