Man dies in crash after street fight in Haxby, York

A man has died after being hit by a taxi following a "violent incident" involving a group of men in York.

The 21-year-old man is thought to have been involved in an incident on Haxby Road at 01:48 BST, police said.

While police were on their way to that incident they were called by a taxi driver who had been passing and reported his car had hit a pedestrian.

Police want to speak to a man who was dropped off by the taxi nearby.

The man officers want to interview is believed to have witnessed the violent incident and collision after being dropped off by at taxi on Haxby Road at about 01.45 BST.

'Very tragic'

Police said they understood that he had got into the taxi at Duncombe Place in York at about 01.30 BST.

He spoke with an Irish accent and officers think he could have "important information to assist the investigation".

Four men were arrested over the disorder.

A 20-year-old man was taken to York District Hospital for treatment to a serious hand injury.

North Yorkshire Police said he was "assisting police with inquiries".

Det Insp Andrea Kell, of York CID, said: "This is clearly a very tragic incident and we are supporting the young man's family while the police investigation continues.

"I urge anyone with information that could assist our inquiries to get in touch without delay."
