'Thousands of pounds' found on York vicarage doorstep

Thousands of pounds worth of banknotes have been found in a bin bag on a vicarage doorstep in York, North Yorkshire Police has confirmed.

The bag of cash was found by a local resident on Tuesday morning and was handed in to police.

It is not yet known exactly how much money was in the bin bag but the amount ran into "thousands", said police.

Detectives are making initial inquiries into where the money came from, a police spokeswoman said.

The location of the vicarage where the cash was found has not been revealed.
