A murder inquiry has begun after a man died in a North Yorkshire resort.

The man, 41, died shortly after police were called to reports of an assault at a property in Scarborough at about 23:40 BST on Wednesday.

North Yorkshire Police said four men were arrested a short time later at an address on Queen's Terrace.

Police said an area of Eastborough, between Foreshore Road and Globe Street, had been closed.

Ch Insp Mark Grange described the attack as an "isolated incident".

He added: "Officers are undertaking high visibility patrols in the area while enquiries continue.

"This is to provide extra reassurance to the local community who are naturally concerned by what has happened."
