Criminals' cash funds Ryedale schools sports equipment

Published

More than 1,000 pupils at schools in Ryedale are to benefit from sports equipment bought using money seized from criminals.

Nearly £24,000 has been recovered from criminals by North Yorkshire Police, under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The force said £2,000 of this would be used to purchase sports equipment, including two rowing machines.

It is hoped this will enable pupils to take part in rowing competitions from next year.

Det Insp Ian Wills, head of North Yorkshire Police's financial investigation unit, said: "It's a great pleasure to be able to make a contribution to our local communities in this way.

"It's very satisfying to know that we have hit criminals where it hurts and children and young people will benefit from the cash."
