Student fees demonstration: Two arrested in York

Published

Two 19-year-old men have been arrested in York by police investigating the violence that flared during last week's student fees demonstration in London.

The York University students were released on bail on Thursday after being held overnight on suspicion of violent disorder, Scotland Yard said.

During last Wednesday's riot protesters broke into Millbank Tower, the Tory HQ in Westminster, causing damage.

Police have now arrested 61 people in connection with the demonstration.

The Metropolitan Police have launched Operation Malone in a bid to trace those responsible for the violence and vandalism.

A spokesman said 54 people were arrested on the day of the demonstration and were bailed pending further inquiries.

Since then seven men have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

Images of 13 protesters suspected of committing criminal offences were released by police on Wednesday.

The images were captured on CCTV cameras inside the office complex and on its roof as dozens of demonstrators stormed the building.
